Everything beyond the solar panel matters. Learn about inverters, batteries, ACDB/DCDB, earthing, lightning arresters, and monitoring systems that make your solar installation safe, efficient, and long-lasting.
A complete home solar system needs 6 key accessories beyond the panels: (1) Solar inverter (string inverter recommended for most UP homes, Rs 22,000-40,000 for 3-5kW), (2) ACDB and DCDB safety boxes with MCBs and surge protection, (3) Earthing kit with two earthing points as per IS 3043, (4) DC cables and MC4 connectors, (5) Mounting structure, and (6) WiFi monitoring system. Batteries (Rs 12,000 for tubular to Rs 2 lakh for lithium) are optional — only needed if you have frequent power cuts. A lightning arrester (Rs 2,000-5,000) is recommended for tall buildings.

For most residential installations in Uttar Pradesh, a string inverter (Growatt or Goodwe, 3-5kW) offers the best balance of cost, efficiency, and reliability. String inverters are the most commonly installed type under PM Surya Ghar and are supported by all DISCOM net metering processes. If you need battery backup for power cuts, upgrade to a hybrid inverter from the same brand.

Batteries store excess solar energy for use during power cuts or at night. Essential for areas with unreliable grid supply.
You need a battery if your area has frequent power cuts (2+ hours daily), you want to use solar power at night, or you need uninterrupted power for critical appliances. If your area has stable power with net metering, the grid acts as your free virtual battery and you can skip the battery cost entirely.

These distribution boxes protect your solar system from electrical faults, surges, and lightning damage.
Installed between solar panels and inverter. Handles DC (direct current) protection.
Contains:
Important: Never use AC MCBs for DC circuits. DC arcs do not self-extinguish like AC, requiring specially rated DC-rated components.
Installed between inverter and main electrical panel. Handles AC (alternating current) protection.
Contains:
DISCOM Requirement: The ACDB must include a visible AC isolator switch accessible to the DISCOM lineman for net metering inspection and emergency disconnection.
Short Circuit Protection
MCBs trip instantly to prevent cable fires and equipment damage
Surge Protection
SPDs divert lightning and grid surges away from your inverter and panels
Safe Maintenance
Isolators let technicians safely disconnect sections for servicing
Earthing protects people from electric shock and equipment from voltage surges. It is mandatory for all solar installations.
Most common for residential solar. A galvanized iron pipe (38mm diameter, 2m length) is buried vertically in the ground with a charcoal and salt mixture. Cost: Rs 1,500-3,000 per point.
A copper or GI plate (600mm x 600mm) is buried at least 3m deep. Used for larger commercial systems. Better conductivity but higher cost: Rs 3,000-6,000 per point.
Uses a backfill compound that maintains low earth resistance for 15-20 years. No water pouring needed. Cost: Rs 4,000-8,000 per point. Ideal for dry soil areas.
Systems without proper earthing are a safety hazard and will fail the DISCOM inspection required for net metering. Poor earthing is the #1 cause of inverter damage during lightning strikes. If your installer skips earthing or uses substandard materials, it is a serious red flag.
Surge protection devices (SPDs) divert lightning energy to ground, protecting your expensive inverter and panels.
Direct lightning protection
When needed: Building has external lightning protection
Cost: ₹5,000-10,000
Rating: 25-50kA discharge capacity
Indirect lightning & surge protection
When needed: All solar installations (recommended)
Cost: ₹2,000-5,000
Rating: 10-20kA discharge capacity

Get instant alerts on your phone if generation drops unexpectedly. Catch panel damage, inverter errors, or shading issues before they cost you money.
Monitor daily, monthly, and yearly generation to verify your system is performing as promised. Compare actual vs expected output.
Many manufacturers require monitoring data as proof of proper operation for warranty claims. Without it, your warranty claim may be rejected.
If your rooftop does not have WiFi coverage, most inverter brands offer a 4G/GPRS dongle (Rs 3,000-5,000) that uses a SIM card to send monitoring data. This is common in rural UP where the inverter is on a terrace far from the WiFi router.

Common questions about solar accessories and components for home installations
Not necessarily. If you have an on-grid solar system with net metering and your area has stable power supply, you do not need a battery. The grid acts as your virtual battery. However, if you experience frequent power cuts (more than 2-3 hours daily), a hybrid system with battery backup is recommended. In areas of UP with 4+ hours of daily power cuts, a lithium battery (5kWh, around Rs 1.5-2 lakh) or tubular battery (150Ah, Rs 12,000-15,000) can provide reliable backup.
For residential on-grid solar in UP, Growatt and Goodwe offer the best value with 5-10 year warranties, built-in WiFi monitoring, and excellent efficiency (96-98%). Havells and Luminous are trusted Indian brands with strong after-sales service networks across UP. For budget installations, UTL and Microtek are popular choices. We recommend choosing a brand with a local service center in your district for faster warranty support.
Most modern inverters come with built-in WiFi monitoring and a free mobile app. Growatt uses ShineServer, Havells uses MyHome app, and Goodwe uses the SEMS portal. If your inverter does not have WiFi, you can add a WiFi dongle (Rs 3,000-5,000) or a 4G dongle for areas with poor WiFi. We strongly recommend monitoring because it helps you detect faults early, track daily generation, and is often required for warranty claims.
Yes, earthing is absolutely mandatory for solar installations. As per IS 3043 standard and UPNEDA guidelines, every solar system must have at least two earthing points: one for the solar panel mounting structure and one for the inverter/electrical system. Proper earthing protects against electric shock, lightning damage, and voltage surges. It also ensures your system passes the DISCOM inspection required for net metering approval.
DCDB (DC Distribution Box) is installed between the solar panels and the inverter on the DC side. It contains DC MCBs, DC SPDs (surge protection devices), and DC isolators to protect against DC faults. ACDB (AC Distribution Box) is installed between the inverter and the main electrical panel on the AC side. It contains AC MCBs, AC SPDs, and an AC isolator. Both are essential safety components that protect your system from short circuits, surges, and lightning damage.
A lightning arrester (SPD Type 1 or Type 2) is highly recommended if your building is the tallest structure in the area, your panels are on an elevated or open terrace, or your area is prone to thunderstorms. In UP, especially during the monsoon season (July-September), lightning strikes can damage expensive inverters and panels. A Type 2 SPD costs Rs 2,000-5,000 and can save you from damages worth lakhs.
