Residential rooftop only. Must own the property or have written NOC from owner. Must have a live DISCOM electricity connection in your name.

Check roof area availability

10 min (measure roof)

You need ~70 sq ft of shadow-free south-facing roof per kW. For a 3 kW system: ~210 sq ft.

Shortlist MNRE-registered vendors

Only MNRE-approved vendors can register your system for subsidy. BL Solar Solutions is MNRE & UPNEDA registered.

Register on PM Surya Ghar portal

Wait for DISCOM feasibility approval

Site survey and design

2-4 hours on site

Vendor visits, measures roof, confirms panel layout, mounting structure design, and cable routes.

Install mounting structure

HDGI or aluminium mount anchored to roof at correct tilt angle (~latitude × 0.87 + 3.1).

Install panels and wiring

1-2 days

Panels clamped to mount, MC4 connectors secured, DC cables routed to junction box and inverter.

Install inverter and AC distribution

Inverter mounted indoors/shed, AC output connected to home distribution panel and bi-directional meter.

Earthing and surge protection

1 day

Earth pits dug, SPDs installed, all metal parts bonded. Resistance must be ≤ 5Ω.

Post-Install & Subsidy

DISCOM inspection and net meter installation

1-2 weeks after completion

DISCOM engineer inspects installation, certifies compliance, and installs bi-directional net meter.

Commissioning and performance test

Solar array turned on, inverter synced to grid, real-time generation confirmed.

Uttar Pradesh adds ₹15,000/kW (max ₹30,000) via UPNEDA. Disbursed 60-90 days after central subsidy.

Set up monitoring and AMC

Activate RMS portal, register for monitoring alerts, book annual maintenance contract (₹1,500-5,000/year).

Required kit items & components

Every PM Surya Ghar installation must include these components. Verify each item is delivered before final payment, and keep photos of serial numbers, DCR stickers, and certificates.

Solar Panels (DCR Mandatory)

Must be DCR-certified (Domestic Content Requirement). Only DCR panels qualify for PM Surya Ghar subsidy — non-DCR panels are rejected even if they're cheaper.

DCR-certified Mono PERC panels (540W standard)

Required~6 panels per kW (540W each)

Convert sunlight to DC electricity. Must be made in India from Indian silicon.

Panel mounting structure

Required

Holds panels at correct tilt and azimuth. Anchored to roof.

  • Hot-dip galvanized iron (HDGI) or aluminium
  • Wind load rating ≥ 180 km/h

Junction box / combiner box

Required

Combines panel strings safely with DC isolator and fuses.

  • IP65 rated
  • DC isolator ≥ 1000V

Solar Inverter (Grid-Tied)

Must be a grid-tied inverter with anti-islanding protection and net-metering compatibility. Pure-sine output is mandatory.

Grid-tied solar inverter

Converts DC panel output to AC 230V/415V grid-compatible power.

Net Metering & Monitoring

Bi-directional meter and data logger are mandatory for PM Surya Ghar. DISCOM installs the net meter after subsidy approval.

Red flags — refuse final payment if you see these

  • Panel DCR certificates missing or manufacturer not on MNRE list.
  • No flash test report showing measured wattage matches rated wattage.
  • Earthing not measured (must be ≤5Ω, documented).
  • SPDs (surge protection) not installed on DC and AC sides.
  • No RMS / monitoring set up.
  • Missing warranties in writing (panels 25yr, inverter 5yr, mounting 5-10yr, workmanship 2-5yr).
  • Installer asks for full payment before DISCOM commissioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What must be included in a PM Surya Ghar solar kit?

Are DCR panels mandatory for PM Surya Ghar?

How long does the full PM Surya Ghar process take?

Can I claim the subsidy myself or must the installer do it?

You can claim it yourself on the PM Surya Ghar portal after commissioning. Most MNRE-registered installers handle the claim on your behalf as part of the installation service — make sure this is included in writing.

What documents should I keep after installation?

Installation certificate, panel flash test report, DCR certificates, DISCOM net meter commissioning report, inverter warranty, panel warranty, mounting structure warranty, and all invoices. Keep these in a folder for 25 years — you'll need them for warranty claims.

What if the installer skips something on the checklist?

Refuse final payment until every item is completed and documented. Common omissions: earthing resistance measurement, SPD installation, RMS (monitoring) setup. These are mandatory under MNRE guidelines — don't accept them as optional.

Can I use the checklist for commercial solar installations?

Yes — 90% of the items apply to commercial installs. Commercial systems are not eligible for PM Surya Ghar subsidy but follow similar installation, DISCOM approval, and commissioning steps. Net metering rules differ by state.
