Net metering allows you to export excess solar energy to the grid and receive credits on your bill. In UP, your DISCOM installs a bidirectional meter that tracks both import and export. Credits are carried forward monthly and settled annually at APPC rate (₹3-4/unit).
For a typical 3 kW system generating ~350 units/month, if you consume 400 units, your bill drops by 85-90%. The savings depend on your consumption pattern, DISCOM tariff, and system size.
All 6 UP DISCOMs support net metering: LESA (Lucknow), KESCO (Kanpur), DVVNL (Agra region), MVVNL (Bareilly region), PuVVNL (Varanasi region), and PVVNL (Meerut/Noida region). Maximum capacity is 500 kW for residential.
Typically 15-30 days for feasibility approval and 7-20 days for meter installation after system commissioning. Total timeline is about 4-8 weeks from application to activation.
Surplus energy is credited to your account at APPC (Average Pooled Power Purchase Cost) rate of ₹3-4/unit. This is lower than the retail tariff (₹5-7/unit), so it's best to size your system to match your consumption.
The bidirectional meter is provided by the DISCOM, usually at a nominal charge. There's no recurring fee for net metering itself. Your regular meter rent and fixed charges continue.
Self-consumed: 351 units (saved at ₹4.6/unit)
Exported to grid: 0 units (credited at ₹3.5/unit APPC rate)
Net metering reduces your bill by offsetting import with solar generation. Surplus energy is carried forward monthly and settled annually.
